Dr.S.Rajaram of Sivananda Orphanage receives the high honor of "Padma Shri" award!

New Delhi, Jan 25, 2002 (PTI) - Fifty-year-old S Rajaram of Chennai was today chosen for the "Padma Shri" award for Social Work by The Government of India. The highly acclaimed "Padma Shri" is awarded by The Government of India to recognize distinguished services rendered to the nation by individuals in various fields.

Foster son of a childless couple, who founded the Sivananda Saraswati Sevashram on the outskirts of Chennai, Rajaram now manages a group of institutions that takes care of orphaned children, aged destitute and physically challenged.

A winner of the Government of India's prestigious National Award for Child Welfare in 1983, Rajaram's Sevashram takes care of about 300 children, 80 aged persons and destitute
women.

Apart from running a high school, which provides vocational and technical education to people also from the nearby areas, the Sevashram has an old age home.

Among the children in his Ashram are 50, who were orphaned in the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict.

Reacting to the honor conferred on him, Rajaram said it was a red letter day for him and it would enthuse him for further endeavors in his mission.
